Police in the United Kingdom have found 39 bodies in the container of a truck near London on Wednesday.
The truck is believed to have come from Bulgaria.
Early indications reveal that the victims are 38 adults and one teenager.
The victims were all pronounced dead at Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays, east of London.
The driver, a 25-year-old-man from Northern Ireland, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Essex Police chief superintendent, Andrew Mariner, described the incident as tragic.
“This is a tragic incident where a large number of people have lost their lives. Our enquiries are ongoing to establish what has happened,” he said in a statement.
The police said they were alerted by the ambulance service following the discovery of the truck container.
“We are in the process of identifying the victims. However I anticipate that this could be a lengthy process,” said Mariner.
The police believe the truck entered Britain at Holyhead port in Wales on Saturday.
